In compact layouts, a correctly placed bumper prevents repeated wall dents and keeps the door opening smooth even when you need a quick hold-open moment. Why the conflict happens in tight layouts
A spring-loaded door stopper on the baseboard is meant to keep the doorknob from striking drywall and can also act as a temporary prop. The protection only works if the stopper is in the plane the door naturally reaches, so when a barn door occupies that plane, the stopper becomes the collision point and the knob can still hit the barn door. The upside is simple, low-cost protection; the trade-off is that it assumes a clear wall surface at the stopping point.
In tight layouts, an open barn door sits almost flush to the wall and effectively becomes a new hard surface in the swing path. If the barn door face sits about 1 in off the wall and the knob projects about 2 in from the swing door, the swing needs to be arrested roughly 3 in before that plane to keep metal from meeting metal. That is why relocating the bumper works better than nudging the spring stop a little along the baseboard.

Measure the swing and choose a safer stop point
In small-space retrofits, I start by protecting the barn door with painter's tape and opening the swing door until it just clears, then I mark that safe point on the swing door edge. Measuring from the hinge to that mark gives the safe radius where the stop should make contact. This quick test tells you where the bumper must land so the door stops before it reaches the barn door.
The calculation is simple: the stop should contact the door at the safe radius, not at the knob. If the hinge-to-knob distance is 30 in and you need about 2 in more clearance, the stop needs to contact around 28 in from the hinge. If the door is sagging or rubbing, tighten or replace hinge screws first so the swing arc is consistent and your new stop placement stays accurate.
Relocation strategies that keep both doors happy
Shift the bumper to a new wall contact
Interior woodwork standards highlight the value of solid attachment points, so a relocated bumper performs best when it hits solid trim or framing. I often move the bumper higher on the wall or onto a small trim block placed at the new contact point, then patch the old hole; if the previous hole is blown out, a toggle bolt gives a stronger bite. The upside is full door opening and clean wall protection; the trade-off is a small finish repair. On a 30 in door, shifting the contact point 3 in toward the hinge shortens the knob arc by the same 3 in, which can be enough to clear the barn door face.
Use a stop that does not need wall space
When the barn door covers the wall area where a baseboard stop would land, a hinge-pin stop or a top-mounted stop keeps hardware off the wall and out of the walking path. The upside is no wall repair and fewer tripping risks; the trade-off is a reduced opening angle and fussier installation, especially on heavier doors. In a tight pantry or bath entry, stopping the door a couple of inches early can keep the knob from touching the barn door while still leaving enough opening to move through comfortably.
Plan for hold-open needs without losing protection
A spring stopper can double as a temporary door prop, but the wall is unprotected if someone bumps the door while it is wedged. If you need the door to stay open daily, a magnetic stopper keeps the door parked and still cushions the close when released, which avoids the barn door taking the hit. In a laundry nook, that means you can carry a basket through without the door drifting into the barn door track.
The key is to treat the door stop as part of the circulation plan, not a tiny afterthought. When the swing path, the barn door plane, and the bumper location line up, both doors move quietly and the walls stay clean. With a careful measurement and a thoughtful relocation, the space feels calmer and easier to live in.
